Prime Land in Spotlight; Public's Chance to Speak Out

IT could be a fruitful fishing and tourist destination, a nature reserve, a new township or community park- lands.

These are some suggestions from our local dignitaries as to the future use of prime state-owned land near the mouth of the Fitzroy River.

The 49ha of land, 80km north of Gladstone, is being reviewed and the community will get a chance to have a say in what it will be used for.

Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council Brad Carter said it had potential to become a significant urban centre, but the parcel of land was too small.

"It is likely to complement urban growth or provide a facility that supports significant growth in that area," he said.

Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan said he thought people would have other ideas for the area, such as horse riding, walking and fishing.

"I personally would not like to see it developed as a township. I think a community purpose is what a lot of people would look at and I would like to see it retained as community use," Mr Hoolihan said. …
