Sarah Fashions a New Venture

SARAH WALKER had a pin cushion wrapped around her wrist, fingers stained with fabric dye and hair restrained by a bandanna.

Her workroom was multi coloured with off cuts of fabrics in spring-garden hues littering all available bench space.

It was straight out of a scene from Project Runway as the young designer prepares to launch her spring/summer line.

Sarah will be launching her fashion label Indigo Queen at the opening night of Que Sera Sera Art Exhibition at Empire Theatre on November 1.

It is the next step in the fashion design world for Sarah who has sewn since she was young.

The creative 27-year-old said fashion designing was the chance to enter a magical world, one where imagination has no limits.

"It's so versatile and pretty much a world of imagination and a[approximately]the fantastical'," she said.

"I am not the biggest fan of chain store a[approximately]fashions', as they are not flattering for most females, you end up looking like many others around you, and you are restricted by what they have available.

"We also pretty much go through the same colour cycles, or re-hash the 70's, 80's or 50's. I don't want to be restricted, even in my wardrobe you can find myriad of styles, and then I assemble them in my own way anyway."

Sarah cannot remember when she actually started designing, it was something she has always just done.

"It's been a series of little events like making bags for girls at school when I was 14 or providing wearable art pieces to boutiques with hand-dyed clothes, bags and jewellery," she said.

"My mum, and both my grandma's are sewers, mum followed in her mum's footsteps and would always make us girls a new a[approximately]Christmas' dress each year. It didn't have to be a Christmas fabric, but it would be at that time of year she'd make us one, and we'd get to pick style and fabric-it was so exciting. …
