LUKE Fielden is making the most of his second Tyneside education, this time on the rugby field rather than the lecture theatre.

Fielden studied sport development coaching at Northumbria University but moved away to begin his rugby union career in National League One and the Championship. After three years flourishing at the lower levels he returned to the region this summer to learn life as a Premiership player with Newcastle Falcons.

"It's nice to come into a different environment and learn from different players, not players, not just the coach," said the fullback or winger.

"Each club I've gone to I've picked up something from somebody different and it's not always the person you go there expecting to learn something from. It's about trying to be as much of a sponge as I can and gathering as much information to make me the best player I can."

Fielden arrived at Kingston Park with a reputation as a prolific try-scorer after touching down 14 times in 25 Championship starts for Bedford last season. It is a reputation he has furthered by crossing in his last two Falcons games, both in the European Challenge Cup.

However, the emphasis on the Druid Park training pitch has been very much on improving the defensive side of Fielden's game, particularly when he has been used on the wing.

Head coach Alan Tait asks his wingers to regularly come inside and reinforce the back division, where at his previous clubs Fielden would have been expected to get chalk on his boots.

Tait, a former British Lion in both nice to into a environment and codes, is well known for his expertise at defensive play and Fielden counts himself lucky to have the chance to work under him. …
