It's time for the Times-Union's 31st annual Holiday Short Story Contest.

Theme: This year, all stories must begin with this line: "It was the largest snowstorm in Florida history." (Readers outside Florida may use their state instead.)

You can take the story in any direction you like after that. Your story can be happy, sad, uplifting, depressing or just plain weird, as long as you can do it in 1,000 words or less.

Categories: Entries will be judged in: Adult, young student (grades K-6) and older student (grades 7-12). Each elementary, middle school and high school in the Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia Times-Union readership area may select one story per grade level to enter in the competition. Schools that send in more than one story per grade level will be disqualified. Home-schooled students are eligible. Judges will select three "best-in-show" entries in each student category. The top student authors will receive $50. Runners-up will each receive $25. …
