Cook Will Not Ruel out More Signings

GEOFF Cook has not ruled out the possibility of more new signings at Durham following the capture of fast bowler Ruel Brathwaite on a twoyear contract.

Brathwaite impressed on trial at the end of last season and the 25-year-old's arrival has facilitated the departure of Luke Evans to Northamptonshire.

Cook is not certain that will be the end of the county's transfer business as they react to a disappointing season, although the loss of Graham Onions' central contract with the ECB means they are unlikely to look for another bowler.

Cook said: "We are always on the look out for quality, but there is a little bit of uncertainty surrounding Graham Onions.

"He hasn't been given a central contract so he will be able to play for Durham when he is fit, but we don't know when that is going to be.

"He has had the operation on his back and he is already back in the gym, so it's so far, so good, but we don't know what is going to happen.

"If he makes a full recovery we will have an excellent player available to us who is desperate to bowl his way back into the England squad.

"The problem is, there is only a limited budget available, and we have to work within the constraints of that budget. Graham has come back into that budget because he isn't going to be paid by the ECB. "We will have to see what we can do. From a purely selfish point of view, we hope England do well in the Ashes and Graham has a lot of work to do to get back into the team because that is going to benefit us."

Cook has been delighted to secure the signing of Brathwaite despite competition from other English counties. The West Indian arrives in the North East following trials at a number of other firstclass clubs and Cook is confident they have pulled off a coup.

He said: "We were fortunate to get a tipoff when he was brought in to bowl at the England team in a practice session at Lord's. …
