THERE was a sea of excitement and a carnival atmosphere at the Maroochydore Library on Saturday afternoon for the launch of a new series of books to help boys learn to read.

More than 150 people turned out to help launch the books by Angela Bueti, who was joined by the friendly monster characters she created,

Scratch and Patch.

Like the books she wrote, which are full of adventure, the children enjoyed a great afternoon in the sun with face painting, lucky dip prizes, great Scratch and Patch tattoos, a huge cake featuring the WOW Books for Boys rocket and the opportunity to have their photos taken with Scratch and Patch.

Mother of two boys, Angela, who also has a background in education, told the crowd the books took two years to create and were born out of the struggle she experienced when teaching her oldest son to read.

"My eldest son Oscar found the readers from school boring and struggled to stay interested," Angela said.

"So I looked to see if I could find something better and someone suggested if I couldn't find something I should just write some myself. …
