Cup Stories Keep History Alive

THE 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup toured Ipswich last week and it was viewed by about 2000 people.

Travelling with the Cup were Victoria Racing Club represen- tative Judith Fitzmaurice and Melbourne Cup ambassador John Letts.

Letts won two Melbourne Cups on Piping Lane in 1972 and Belldale Ball in 1980.

"Lettsy" had a range of terrific stories told in an enthusiastic and comical manner.

He kept everyone entertained at the different venues and was a big hit with the many people interested in viewing the valuable Cup.

Letts spoke of how winning the Melbourne Cup has changed the lives of jockeys and trainers.

Upon winning a Melbourne Cup, a jockey is in the record books and known forever.

Lettsy's big break came out of the blue when he was 28 years old and was a late riding change for Piping Lane Co an 80-1 outsider not expected to figure in the Cup in 1972.

He only met the horse for 15 minutes Co from being legged up to dismounting after winning.

Letts also spoke of his enjoyment at riding Banjo to interview the winning jockeys nowadays.

He has been conducting post-race interviews throughout the Flemington carnival for 17 years.

Letts was asked many times for a tip during the tour Co he suggested that So You Think is a champion and would win the Cox Plate and that Shocking would make it back-to -back wins in the big race.

Fitzmaurice spoke of the making of the Cup and explained the manufactured value of $150,000 due to the number of hours in crafting it and also due to the pure gold content in the item.

She further explained that with a weight of 4 kilograms, the Cup has increased in value to an estimated $180,000 based on recent gold price increases.

The Cup was crafted to look exactly as did the 1930 Cup won by Phar Lap.
