Virginia junior linebacker Trevor Grywatch had to miss practice last week.

Cavaliers coach Mike London didn't mind. The walk-on was only helping save someone's life.

Grywatch spent more than seven hours last week at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond having a cup and a half of stem cells withdrawn from his blood to donate to a 60-year-old man who was suffering from leukemia.

It was the end result of a drive that London started among his players during spring practice to sign up themselves and solicit other people to volunteer for a simple mouth swab, with the DNA results filed away as possible stem-cell donors.

As it turned out, Grywatch was almost a perfect match for the man, who remains unidentified.

"When you sign up originally, you never really think about this even being a possibility," Grywatch told the Associated Press. "The odds are against the recipients to find identical matches. The fact that someone's life could be helped out by you is a pretty incredible feeling."

It's a process that hits home for London. In 2003, his daughter, Ticynn, needed bone marrow when she was 4 and suffering from a rare form of anemia. Physicians pegged her odds at 10,000-to-1 for survival, but she recovered after London donated the bone marrow himself.

"When you can do that and give back of yourself to give to someone else, there's nothing more special," London said of Grywatch. "I'm extremely, extremely proud of him."
