GYMPIE junior cricketers Clare O'Brien, Madeline Austin and Stephanie Mills were simply outstanding at the recent Queensland Girls State Cricket Championships.

The trio played a key role in helping Wide Bay to victory in the competition, held at Gympie's One Mile Ovals for the first time, overcoming Darling Downs in a lopsided final contest.

Wide Bay batted first and set an imposing total before switching roles and demolishing Darling Downs in convincing fashion.

Gympie organiser of the state carnival, Shereene Moy, was in awe of Wide Bay's performance.

"Wide Bay played really well throughout the whole carnival and particularly in the final," she said.

"It was a convincing win in the end and a great finish to competition."

Adding to the excitement of Wide Bay's victory was the selection of O'Brien, Austin and Mills in the Queensland squad destined for national competition in Canberra next January.

Moy was delighted with the result but was not in the least bit surprised. …
