Seventh Pan Pacs for Brien at Age 70

HE loves the sport. Loves the fresh air and open water, too. But there is one thing that has held Grafton's John Brien back from rowing recently.

"We train about four days a week and the only reason I've had a break from rowing is because I lived nowhere near the water," he laughed.

Brien, 70, has been competing competitively since 1954 and next month will tackle the seventh Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast.

He will hit the water in one of 34 sports a and more than 10,000 athletes a on the program.

No qualifying standards or times are required to enter the Masters Games. The only criteria is that participants meet the minimum age requirement for their respective sport, which is 27 years of age for rowing.

Brien, who started rowing when he was 14, will compete in his sixth Games with the Grafton Rowing Club.

The club will provide 22 rowers a 11 male and 11 female a for the Games. …
