ELECTION 2010 STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 17; Candidates Agree: Government Could Lose Some Weight Lake Ray Faces John Rosso's Write-In Effort for the Legislature

If John Rosso's long-shot run for Florida's Legislature started a long, high-rolling political career, he might well be disappointed.

That is because Rosso's main ambition as an unfunded, write-in candidate for the House District 17 seat is to tout his plan for eliminating Florida's paid political posts over 10 years, putting the public directly in charge of many more decisions.

"My main thing is to get the people to start taking politics in their own hands," said Rosso, 47, who argues Florida government needs to be both more democratic and leaner.

"We must reduce taxes, government spending, excessive contract spending and get back to basics," Rosso, a laid-off school administrator, said by e-mail.

In a year when shrinking government is a big issue from tea parties to town halls, both Rosso and Republican incumbent Lake Ray have a lot to say about it.
