Cheaper, Faster Internet Soon for Coast

SUNSHINE Coast residents look set to start paying less for faster internet with a new telecommunications company moving in.

Phone and internet provider Westnet has just flicked the switch to start its ADSL2+ access in Caloundra and Mooloolaba.

The company's communications manager, Anthony Fisk, said the extra competition would drive prices down and services up on the Coast.

He said before Westnet, which is associated with iiNet, moved onto the Coast only Optus and Telstra offered ADSL2+ broadband.

While the fast broadband has previously come at a price, Mr Fisk said it was hoped more companies would start offering the service and prices would quickly drop.

Westnet is currently looking to expand its services to Caboolture, Maroochydore and Buderim and expects to be set up in those areas in the next six months.

Mr Fisk said the lack of competition meant businesses and household consumers on the Coast had previously faced slower internet speeds and higher prices. …
