Hail Storm ,Cyout of the Blue'; Five-Minute Deluge Dumps Cold Hail

A FIERCE five-minute storm complete with lightning, thunder and hail swept across The Glen, 20km south of Warwick just before 2pm yesterday, blocking drains and downpipes and leaving 14mm of rain behind.

The intense storm appeared to come from just one big black cloud and appeared out of a clear blue sky, giving no notice of what was to come.

Property owner Marion Skinner said it was the first hail across the farm for perhaps two years and even then, it was only light.

"We had a storm similar to this about five years ago, it came very quickly and left heaps of hail in its wake," she said.

"This was reminiscent of the summer storms we used to get 20 or so years ago and even though we've had plenty of rain here since the beginning of August, this lot won't go astray.

"I hope we don't get another rodeo hail storm this year as we did in 2003 but at this time of year in Warwick, the weather does what it likes."

The pea-sized hail blocked the flow of water into a 5000 gallon tank beside Mrs Skinner's house and left a mound of ice but was already melting in the warm afternoon sun when the photos opposite were taken. …
