CHRIS HUGHTON has insisted he had to put Premier League survival ahead of gunning for the Carling Cup after the Magpies crashed out by a heavy scoreline against Arsenal.

The Magpies boss made nine changes to the team that beat West Ham on Saturday night and rested several key players such as Fabricio Coloccini, Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique - while Andy Carroll, Joey Barton and Jonas all made sub appearances.

Certain sections of the St James' Park crowd felt that a stronger team was needed against Arsene Wenger's side, who in the end romped to a 4-0 victory over the Magpies.

Hughton told the Chronicle: "Any supporters that will say that, I understand.

"They support this club, and they want to see this club winning every game."

And Hughton was clear that top-flight safety was Newcastle's remit this season and nothing else.

The former Republic of Ireland international said: "I respect their thoughts, but I have to do the best job I can for this club, and I have to make very tough decisions. …
