IN what is a disappointing day for cricket in Toowoomba, the city will not field a team in this weekend's Schaeffer Shield.

Selectors yesterday pulled the pin on the annual representative tournament as they could not find enough players committed to travel to Bundaberg.

Toowoomba Cavaliers made the same trip to Bundaberg two years ago for the Schaeffer Shield, but only six players made themselves available this week for the Darling Downs City team which now represents the city at zone level.

Selector Paul Toohey has been involved in cricket in Toowoomba for two decades and he can't remember a time when the city didn't send a team to the Schaeffer Shield.

"I don't think that would have happened. It may have come close to happening but it hasn't happened in my time," he said.

Player interest in this level of cricket has dwindled over the past couple of years and the increasing problem came to a head this week. …
