College Smackdown; A Gator Is Welcome - in Bulldog Garb

It was a great day to be a Bulldog Oct. 16, and all week too. The homecoming festivities kicked off - time out.

The festivities began with the collaring ceremony - time out.

With the collaring ceremony of UGA VIII - time out.

OK, I'm back and just like the Dawgs, I've used all my time outs in the first five minutes of this column.

UGA VIII, "Big Bad Bruce," began his reign as top Dawg at homecoming 2010, with a beat down and shutout of the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Dawgs beat the 'Dores 43-0, but not before they used all three of their time outs in the first five minutes of the game. That weird start was just a preview of how weird the game would be.

The Dawgs' defense posted a shutout against a Vanderbilt team that hung up 52 points just seven days earlier?

Did I mention that the Dawgs amassed 547 yards of total offense and 43 points on the 'Dores, and they still pretty much just sat on the ball in the fourth quarter to run out the clock.

Now I'm not a stats guy, but if you run the numbers, that equals a score of 84-14 against teams from the hillbilly state in just eight days.

It's just too bad we don't have a few more hobnail-boot wearin', dentally challenged teams from the Smoky Mountain state to play!

And weren't our team and mascots great? Our line blocked, our quarterback grew up some more right before our eyes, our running backs ran and didn't fumble, our defense tackled and ferociously defended our end zone, our special teams were special and our kicker set a new record of 115 for 115 extra points. And our mascots were the best in the land, one ending his reign and the other just starting. We had a great win.

It was truly a special day in Athens, not just because the Dawgs won on homecoming so the chapel bell rang all night. Nor was it because we now have our heir to the UGa throne in place.

No, it was extra special to me because my smackdown buddy, a Gator in Dawg's clothing, the one-and-only Eric Corbett, not only found his way to Athens, he also found his way to section 322, row 16, seat 8, before kickoff!

Eric's plan was to beat me to my seats and surprise me. …
