Is This the Best We Can Do?

Article excerpt

I'M no genius when it comes to fancy looking buildings but I reckon the style lines on places like the Jetty Memorial Theatre make them look fantastic.

Three cheers for saving the Old Courthouse on Harbour Drive for posterity and as for other fine constructions a well, that's just about it.

Creating new public buildings as ugly as a hatful must be official policy on the Coffs Coast.

That's the feeling every time I drive past the new extension to our much-loved War Memorial swimming pool.

From the outside the new joint looks like a barn for hatching battery hens a or even the abattoir where they eventually cop the hatchet.

I can't help but get this mental picture that inside the wall there is row upon row of cluckers stacked to the ceiling, popping out cackleberries until their days of usefulness are over and they end up as cold cuts alongside the salad on the plates of official guests at council soirees.

May it be surmised a a[approximately]tasteful' tribal motif will at some future time adorn its walls to complete the decorative process and to deflect unwanted attention from this obvious eyesore?

Or maybe the architects should paint the walls with something more colourfully appropriate.

Like a Foghorn Leghorn look-a-like, floating in the pool aboard a blown-up tractor tyre tube while sipping on a Harvey Wallbanger in the shade of a canvas beach umbrella.

At least it would give us all a laugh every time we drive by a[approximately]the henhouse'.

Unfortunately, it's not the only example of pug-ugly architecture messing up the scenery.

Take a drive down Bray Street to check out the new electrical sub-station. …
