AT a time when 4x4s are not exactly in vogue, it is a bit novel to have a model that not only looks like a biggish crossover, but also handles like a saloon.

The Audi Q5, with its flowing lines, seems to pull off the trick - despite retaining all the qualities of a compact SUV that still appeal across a wide range of potential buyers.

It offers eye-catching styling that is unmistakably Audi, and that is obviously one of the main attractions.

Audis are not cheap, and the Q5 is no exception, but it is well-equipped. However, the optional extras on the model I drove took it from just over pounds 32,000 to a whopping pounds 41,920.

But it is a prestige brand and you can be sure that residual values will be good.

The front end sports the signature Audi deep grille, deep black air scoops with stylish front headlights and LED daytime running lights.

These also feature on the light clusters on an equally stylish rear end, while the whole streamlined look is offset by neat alloy wheels.

Despite being smaller than its close sibling, the Q7, it is still 2.81m (9.2ft) long - the longest wheelbase in its class - and is hugely practical.

The vehicle comfortably accommodates five and the seats can be flexibly arranged to accommodate loads of shapes and sizes, which I comfortably did.

Rear seat backrests are angle-adjustable and fold down by activating the remote release lever in the luggage compartment.

This compartment, offering access to a second storage area under the floor, then expands from 540 to 1,560 litres in volume. Optional extras include a rail mounting kit for luggage, a net partition and a luggage compartment liner, and another option is the "rear bench seat plus".
