Still Pride in the Crown

IF there was ever any doubt about the importance the young women who enter the Jacaranda Queen competition place on that competition, it was dispelled on Saturday night.

It was perhaps the 2009 Jacaranda Holiday Princess, Amanda Finucane, who best illustrated what being involved in the festival meant to her.

She told the audience she had a prepared speech, but abandoned it because it did not truly reflect what she felt.

Then she spoke passionately about the festival, the friends she had met, how it had made her grow into a better person and how she loved every second of it.

And, just as she was finishing, the tears started as she reflected on her year.

Last year's queen, Mackenzie Harvison, was equally passionate, if not so emotional, about how proud she was to have represented the Clarence Valley as Jacaranda Queen for the past year. It was an experience she would never forget, she said. …
