SUSIE O'Neill was pretty quick in her return to competitive sport yesterday.

But she wasn't quick enough to claim bragging rights in her Brisbane household.

It was after competing in the much shorter Legends Triathlon at last year's Noosa Multi-Sport Festival that the former swimming golden girl, and her husband Cliff Fairley, decided they would train for the full Olympic distance of the 2010 Noosa Triathlon.

With their family cheering on, Susie and Cliff hit the water together early yesterday morning and crossed the finish line tired, but happy with their first-up performances, 11 minutes apart.

Cliff, who Susie thought would win the friendly family duel, took two hours 18 minutes 35 seconds to his wife's 2:29:27.

"I nearly needed my (doctor) husband out there on the run leg," Susie, now 37, said. "It was a lot harder than I expected.

"I made sure I kept wetting myself down a lot to make it feel like in the pool but it still felt bad. …
