Big Hitting Proves the Difference in Northern Championship Deciders

MACKAY Whitsunday under-age sides found themselves on the wrong side of some big hitting in the annual North Queensland championships at Harrup Park on the weekend.

The U19s chased leather against eventual winner Cricket Far North (Cairns) on Saturday and Tropical North (Townsville) yesterday, while the U17s also had a hot time against the same teams.

Braden Richardson's 109 and Mitchell Croghan's 65 helped Far North to 5/303 from its 50 overs on Saturday, before Mackay Whitsunday was dismissed for 138 off 39 overs.

Brett Simpson (2/54) and Sean Cook (2/57) were Mackay Whitsunday's best bowlers, and Jack Sambell (31) and James Jennings (23) led the way with the bat.

Kyle Leeson's 54 was the only saving grace of Mackay Whitsunday's innings as it was dismissed for 94 by Tropical North yesterday, with Justin Dixon (4/18) and Wayne Darrel (4/21) ripping through the line-up.

Tropical North swung the bat, with Trent Clemments (94 not out) and Troy Menegan (75) leading the way to 7/336. …
