Disqualified Drivers Swerve to Avoid Jail

TWO disqualified drivers narrowly missed going to jail yesterday, with one losing his licence until 2018 and the other until 2015.

Brent Christian McGlashan, 39, and Jamie Carrington Johns, 37, neither strangers to the legal system, pleaded guilty in Bundaberg Magistrates Court to driving without a licence.

McGlashan had been disqualified from driving for five years and sentenced to jail in July 2008.

But on July 31 this year, Agnes Water police saw him drive a ute into a service station.

Sergeant Robyn Shapcott said the defendant was aimmediately remorsefula when approached by the officers and said he had driven to pump up the ute's tyres and return a hammer to a friend.

He admitted he only had to walk 50m from his home to return the tool.

Probation parole officer Greg McMahon said McGlashan was serving a probation period for drug offences when he drove while disqualified.

Mr McMahon said while McGlashan's offence was aa case of complete and utter stupiditya, the defendant had amade some very significant inroadsa in recovering from drug use. …
