Four-Time Queen Gilmore Pays Tribute to Gentleman of Surf

NEWLY-crowned four-time women's world champion Stephanie Gilmore described the late Andy Irons as one of a kind.

Kingscliff's queen of surfing was yesterday among a wave of the world's best surfers grieving the loss of former three-time world champion Irons on Wednesday.

A paddle-out memorial service, attended by hundreds of admirers, was held on-site at the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico yesterday, as the world's surfing community paid tribute to the 32-year-old Hawaiian icon.

Gilmore was among the mourners and echoed the sentiments of all who were present a that of praise and disbelief for the fallen.

"It's a really sad day and I think everyone is still in shock," the 22-year-old said.

"Luckily we're all here together. All the girls were down here and we paddled out to remember Andy.

"We didn't see the guys that often on Tour, but Andy in particular is one of the most beautiful human beings. …
