Piece of Ballina History for Sale; Old Bank Building to Go under Hammer

THE historic old bank building on the corner of River and Moon streets in Ballina is going up for auction next month.

Heritage-listed by the Ballina Shire Council, the building was originally the Ballina branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney (CBC).

The bank opened its doors in 1883 and remained in business until the 1980s, when CBC was taken over by the NAB.

One of its present owners is McGrath real estate, whose principal, John Nicolson, said the buildingretained much of its charm.

"There are a number of wonderful architectural features remaining, such as a pressed-metal ceiling and cedar staircase," he said.

Mr Nicolson said the agency would continue to operate from the site.

"We decided we are better off putting more equity into expanding the business, rather than being our own landlord," he said.

As part of its regional expansion, McGrath intends opening a branch in Byron Bay in the first half of next year. …
