Springfield Pushes Hard for Hospital

THERE are growing calls for the State Government to make a decision on whether to part-fund a private hospital in Springfield by early next year.

Brisbane's Mater Health Services is keen to build a private day hospital in Springfield by 2013 and is in negotiations with the government about the possible provision of public beds.

Speaking at the Greater Springfield Health Symposium yesterday, Parliamentary Secretary for Healthy Living Murray Watt said a decision had not yet been made.

The State Government's stance was a hot topic at the symposium, with a survey showing a majority of Springfield residents wanted their own hospital.

Springfield Land Corporation chief executive Jim Varghese said the proposed private/public model was one the government should jump on board with.

"If we want to build this facility by late 2012 ... early 2013, we have to have this resolved, certainly by the New Year. …
