SURF BOATS: Mooloolaba will be pitched into the opening round of the aussieBum Queensland Cup with a new-look open men's team.

As one of several Sunshine Coast clubs to compete in 2010/2011, Mooloolaba is expected to be among the top teams in many divisions.

Men's sweep Grant Cooper is hoping his team can gel early in the series, which starts at Bundaberg today.

"Ours is a new team that's only been together for about six weeks, so this weekend will give us an idea of where we're at," he said.

"We're not expecting to win. It'd be good to make the final."

He is joined by Chris Crompton (number two seat), former reserve grader Matt Miller (stroke), former Alexandra Headland competitor Andrew Kerr (three seat) and rising talent Steve Verboomen (bow), who is making the step up from the under-23 ranks.

"He's got the call-up and he's been going great guns at training. He's a bit of a talent," Cooper said.

The Mooloolaba open women's team is expected to be among the stronger units again. …
