College Smackdown; Dawgs Ready to Sink Teeth into Some Gators

HOW 'BOUT THEM DAWGS! I sure wasn't writing that in all caps on Oct. 3. Who in the entire Dawg nation, besides "Mr. Never Panic" coach Mark Richt, saw this turnaround coming - 128 points in three SEC East wins in three weeks? That is a pretty Dawg-gone good turnaround if you ask me.

The Dawgs dismantled the Kentucky Mild-cats from the outset Oct. 23 in Lexington, posting a 28-3 lead in the first quarter and a half.

The Dawgs didn't play a flawless game. We gave up too many third-and-long conversions. Kicker Blair Walsh seems to have developed a case of the tips, but others stepped up to be star players.

The Dawgs took the lead and never looked back. The Dawgs' 3-4 defense pressured and confused the Kentucky offense into three early fumbles and as the Kentucky offense self-destructed, the Dawgs offense put the ball in the hands of running back Washawn Ealey. Not only did Ealey not fumble, he ran his way back into the Dawg nation's good graces with a 157-yard night capped off with five rushing touchdowns.

There have been lots of great Georgia tailbacks through the years, but guess how many have scored five rushing touchdowns in one game? Not one! Only Ealey! And we get running back Caleb King back this week.

The Dawgs' up-and-coming quarterback Aaron Murray and receiver A.J. Green made only pedestrian efforts against the clawless 'Cats, with Murray tossing the ball only 12 times for 112 yards, with just six going to A.J. Green for 86 yards.

That wasn't because Coach Bobo or Coach Right got stupid or went conservative. Instead, they got smart and got out of the way and let Kentucky self-destruct under the Dawgs' defensive pressure.

Now after skinning the 'Cats, the Dawgs are on a three-game winning streak. They take on the Gators today, who are on a three-game losing skid.

I usually have some great Gator jokes at this point, but there isn't much funny for either team this year. …
