FAMILIES living in a landmark Newcastle housing estate will be asked for their views on regeneration plans for the area.

Bosses at Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) have come up with ideas on how the Byker estate could look in the future.

They are waiting for the Government to rubber-stamp proposals for a multi-million pound makeover. And in the meantime they have come up with plans for how the estate could be restored according to architect Ralph Erskine's designs.

A vacuum-based rubbish chute system, to suck recyclable waste into underground chambers for storage before collection, charging points for el ectric cars and solar panels are D ES I G Ralph among the green schemes which could be used.

But bosses stress the ideas can only come to fruition if a Byker Community Trust - formed by residents and housing experts to manage the estate and its future - is set up.

YHN is holding a series of sessions for people on the estate to find out more about the plans and give their views. …
