SES Calls for Volunteers; Wet Season Is Busiest

SOUTH Kolan is pleading for people to volunteer as SES members, with the group running on a skeleton staff coming into the storm season.

The group has lost four members in the past eight months and has been unable to build its numbers.

South Kolan leader Wendi Guy said the group currently had eight members including some inactive, who man the radios and help run the behind-the-scenes work.

"At the moment if something happens through the day, we only have three people, maybe four if we are lucky, that can come out," she said.

"With the storm season coming we really need more people."

South Kolan is currently relying on other SES groups to back them up in an emergency situation.

Ms Guy said this could be a problem because during storm season, South Kolan backed up Bundaberg.

Ms Guy said coming into the busiest time of the year for SES volunteer groups was not a good time to be short-staffed.

"We're supposed to be getting six cyclones this season, so who knows? …
