A LITTLE medal I can keep forever shows me that I've finished the Coolangatta Gold.

Hopefully the memories will stay with me for that long as well.

Yesterday, I woke up at first light at 4.30am feeling absolutely terrified.

The swell had been building since I'd arrived on the Gold Coast and now it was even bigger.

I'm not good at getting out through the break on my ski and even if the race start was in deep water, as it turned out to be, there was no guarantee I would even get to the starting line unscathed.

In the first few starting groups that headed out, there were guys getting smashed, skis flying through the air and doing pirouettes.

When my time came, I went straight out, not getting knocked off once. What a relief.

The ski leg was into the wind and very hard and once a pack broke away, I was left on my own, just like it had been during training.

By the time I jumped off the ski, my legs were like jelly, I was a bit delirious and when the swim started, my shoulders were so sore, I could barely roll them over. …
