Article excerpt

The much-anticipated regional volleyball rematch between rivals Bishop Kenny and Nease is officially set. Both teams won their quarterfinals Tuesday night to ensure a semifinal showdown at Nease next week.

Bishop Kenny needed five games to oust visiting Menendez on Tuesday.

Down 2-1 and facing elimination in the fourth game, BK came alive. When the Falcons (20-9) tied things at 7-all, it proved to be the wake-up call that ignited the Crusaders. BK blistered Menendez for 12 of the next 13 points and shut off the momentum the Falcons had built.

Using a big block from middle Mackenzie Collins, the Crusaders closed things out quickly and left no questions in the fifth game. Collins had three of her team-leading nine blocks in the fifth, and the Crusaders never trailed. Cari Whitmire had 21 kills to lead BK (19-9).

Nease swept visiting Paxon 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 to secure the rematch with BK, which bounced the defending state champion Panthers 3-2 in the regional semifinals last season at Bishop Kenny.

Kamryn Sherman had 33 assists, Holland Hoefnagel, had 11 kills and Mariah McCallum added 23 digs for the Panthers (26-1) on Tuesday.

Junior Kenedy Talley had five service points for the Mustangs. ... Port Orange Spruce Creek (22-7) ended Orange Park's season with a 3-1 victory, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16. Jasmine Anderson (13 kills), Haley McKissack and libero Mary Marlar led the Raiders (19-9).

Region 2-2A: Gainesville P.K. Yonge's strategic serving proved too much for Providence as the Stallions lost 3-0 in the quarterfinals, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23. Junior Brooklyn Kelly and sophomore Madison McCarty turned in standout performances for Providence (19-9). …
