Tributes Pour in for Stabbed Father; County in Shock over the Death of Two Men within Hours of Each Other

A murder investigation was launched immediately after the attack which left 28-year-old Glen Simmons dying in the street outside the Co-op in Guide Post, near Ashington.

Paramedics tried to save his life and in an effort to give him treatment rushed him to Wansbeck General Hospital, but he later died.

Last night tributes were paid on social networking site Facebook to Mr Simmons, who had a young son.

One user, called Courtney Bell, wrote: "Live each day like its your last. RIP Glen. Sleep tight."

Another, Lisa Thornton, wrote: "RIP Glen my thoughts are with your family at this very tragic time."

And Jemz Louise Dundas wrote: "RIP Glen - so many old friends being taken so young. The big man takes the best for angels."

A large area of Guide Post was sealed off following the attack, just before 11am on Sunday morning.

Officers and paramedics were called to an area known as the Square at 10.54am following reports a man was injured.

A post-mortem was carried out and police confirmed Mr Simmons had died from stab wounds. Local people reported the victim was stabbed in the neck as he left the Co-op, on High Street, with his family. Neighbours spoke of how their peaceful Sunday morning was shattered by the attack.

Mark Elliott, 45, a car dealer, who lives near to the Co-op, said: "I heard a man was stabbed outside, he's gone into the shop bleeding and the girl in there has tried to help him.

"You might expect this sort of thing late at night, but not at 11am on a Sunday morning. You don't expect to wake up and find a murder on your doorstep. It's quite a good area, there are never any problems. …
