Just a Matter of Time, Andy; Barton Forecasts Carroll England Call

JOEY Barton is convinced it is only a matter of time before Andy Carroll forces his way into Fabio Capello's England squad after describing Newcastle's win at Arsenal as the perfect team performance.

Although Carroll's impending call up into the England squad has dominated the agenda in the aftermath of Newcastle's tremendous win at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, Barton felt it was important others also receive plaudits.

It was Carroll's towering header which secured United's first win at the Emirates - and their first away to Arsenal since 2001- but it was a brilliant defensive display which enabled them to cling on to that narrow advantage.

"We had a game plan and stuck to it as a man," said Barton, whose own performances in midfield have led some to argue his own case for an England recall is strengthening.

"Everyone can look at each other in the eye and say they turned in a performance - to get anything there, you have to have that.

"I was a bit worried, as all the senior lads were, that with all which happened last week, which was a massive win for the city, this would be a bit like after the Lord Mayor''s show.

"It was important we came and turned in a performance. All of that back-line, to a man were fantastic. We have won the game, but they have given us the platform.

"Tim Krul's save in the first half is one which wins you the game. He did not have a great deal to do, but he done it well. He came for crosses and was composed when we were under pressure. "Andy Carroll gets all of the headlines, but Shola Ameobi was fantastic. He plays with a lot of ambition inside to prove people wrong - people who have leveled accusations of every kind at person in that dressing room.

"He missed a lot of games with injury, and he is a Geordie lad. When the flak was being dished out, it was a bit quick to come to him. He is enjoying his football and he and Andy were magnificent today." Inevitably, given his sixth goal of the season and his all round display against the Gunners, the conversation turned to Carroll and Barton is a huge fan of the 21-year-old. …
