Bougainvilleas Victims of Pruning

I have four bougainvilleas. Two are in pots and are blooming nicely. Two are in the ground and haven't bloomed. What could be wrong?

Here are the steps we walked through to get to the non-blooming issue.

All of your plants appear healthy and green, a good sign. All of the plants get plenty of sun, so that is not the problem. All of the plants have sufficient water - not too much, maybe not enough, but bougainvilleas seem to produce flowers well under dry conditions, so I don't think this is the problem.

Your fertilizing practices seem normal and not excessive so as to cause excess vegetative or green growth (caused by too much nitrogen).

Then -aha - you mentioned that you have pruned back the plants that are growing in the ground twice this summer because they were getting too big. Your pruning is likely the reason they aren't blooming. They haven't had enough time to re-bloom between prunings.

It sounds as though the plant might be growing a bit large for its location. If you don't want to move it, you could try training the stems to trail in another direction. Then, let it grow. If the weather remains mild, you still might see some blooms before cold weather sets in.

Cool season herbs include oregano, rosemary, salad burnet, thyme, chamomile, chervil, chives, garlic, lavender, dill and fennel. Some gardeners manage to keep some warm season herbs going through part of the winter as well.

Herbs grow best in well drained soils or potting mediums and prefer about six hours of daily sunlight. Light fertilizations aid in growth. …
