Truckie's Mistake Caused Fatality

A CORONER has revealed driver error was to blame for the death of a man whose truck plunged off Cedars Bridge into the Burnett River last year.

An inquest into the death of David John Hamerton, 60, who died on June 15, 2009, began last week when the Bundaberg Coroners Court heard evidence from the investigating officer, a police diver and a road engineer.

Coroner Jennifer Batts yesterday told the court Mr Hamerton had been on the phone for about five or 10 minutes before the caller heard him swear, a crashing noise and then silence.

Ms Batts said the man tried to phone the driver several times before he called a Hamerton family member.

They then drove along Cedars Road where they found a large pool of water on the bridge. Mr Hamerton's son returned to the bridge shortly after where he saw lights shining under the water.

The truck driver had dropped a load of sawdust off at a Bucca address prior to the crash and was on his way home when he crashed. …
