St Patrick's at Wardell Celebrates Its Centenary

ST PATRICK'S Catholic Church at Wardell was overflowing yesterday as hund-reds gathered to celebrate its centenary.

Bishop of Lismore, the Most Reverend Geoffrey Jarrett, was the principal celebrant for the special Mass.

He said it was an important occasion for the people of Wardell and Broadwater.

"This is one of those celebrations that only country people can do as well as what we've seen here," he said.

"The church's centenary has been a reunion of families, a celebration of origins and a celebration of faith.

"The people of Wardell and Broadwater built this church and they have ensured its survival over the years.

"It's a great thing.

"This church has a future. That's also what the centenary celebrations are about."

Bishop Jarrett said 21 priests and sisters had come from the Wardell parish over the years.

"That's a great achievement," he said.

"These people should be proud of their church and of what they've done."

The foundation stone of St Patrick's Catholic Parish was blessed and opened onNovember 13, 1910. …
