Have We All Given Up on Being Parents Because It's Hard?

Article excerpt

HAVE parents lost the power to be parents once their children become teenagers?

Or have we just become slack?

I'm not sure what it is, but frankly, I'm tired of it.

The story last week of the teenager whose mum cried foul after she couldn't get him to wear his bicycle helmet so police officers made him walk home, highlights the situation.

Why couldn't the mum get her 15-year-old son to listen to her instruction to obey the law?

It is because teenagers think they know better. And we allow them to think this.

Then we complain that we have become powerless.

In the past it was a few families whose teenagers went astray, now almost every family has a story.

And it has become too hard for the parent who wants to fight back to do this as they will be fighting on their own while their child will have an army of friends in support.

So many of us have given up.

We let our underage children get drunk on a Saturday night down at Mooloolaba, we have no idea where they're going Co because it is too hard to change it.

We let them roam the streets aimlessly after dark and then we feign surprise and anger when they break or destroy something.

We whinge about the youth of today when we could still have a hand in shaping them.

Maybe it's time parents joined forces and reminded teenagers of their place in this society.

They have the right to basic food, they have the right to an education, they have the right to love and protection, but that doesn't translate to the right to invade the fridge or treat the room they don't even rent with disrespect and spend all day in front of a computer they haven't bought.

Maybe we should remind all our teenagers that they have a voice, but they don't have the right to an opinion until they're old enough to use it with caution. …
