IS marriage in Australia a privilege or a basic human right?

It may seem like an odd question, but for advocates of same-sex marriage, it is at the core of their argument.

While the subject has been hotly debated for some time, this week it has once again been thrust into the spotlight of political, media and community discussion by federal Greens MP Adam Bandt.

Calling for members to recognise community support for gay marriage in Australia, the motion made by Mr Bandt on Monday calls on MPs to gauge their constituents' views on the issue.

Despite the latest debate being well received by same sex-marriage advocates, Angela Pollard, a North Coast spokesperson for Equal Love, said the focus should be on basic human rights rather than a populist or conscience vote. "I'm not comfortable with the idea of a conscience vote, because this is a human right," said Ms Pollard.

"Gay and lesbian people have human rights, the same as anybody else. …
