Mystery of Burial Place of Founding Father Uncovered; Anthelme Thozet Gave Much to Rockhampton and Queensland

THE lost final resting place of one of Rockhampton's most famous founding fathers, Anthelme Thozet, has been discovered in a residential street in Koongal.

Appropriately, for the man who introduced mangoes to Australia, his body lies in the shade of a huge mango tree in Codd Street alongside his son and daughter-in-law.

Local historian Susan Cunningham has hailed the discovery a made by archeologists using ground penetrating radar a as a breakthrough and Cr Tony Williams says he will campaign for a fitting memorial on the site for the pioneering French botanist who died in Rockhampton from bilious fever in 1878.

"This is a very significant historical find," Cr Williams said yesterday.

"Anthelme Thozet is an important figure not just in the history of Rockhampton but in the development of Australia.

"Locally he planted the shade trees on the river bank, introduced mangoes and had a lot to do with the establishment of the Botanic Gardens. …
