Hall You Need for a Good Laugh; Local Comedian Returns to His Roots for Comedy Gig

LOCAL comedy legend Eric Scarboro takes to the stage this weekend to host a comedy night at Gateshead Old Town Hall.

The night will mark an emotional return to the historic building which the comedian remembers vividly as a child, when he would visit with his classmates to see The Scottish Children's Theatre perform.

Eric said: "We were all lined up at school once a year and bussed to the Town Hall.

"The first time, we had no idea what was going on but the older kids were hyper all week.

"I think the surprise was a big part of it.

Once inside we sat in rows in a packed hall. It was the biggest, most exciting place I had ever seen."

Deckham-born and raised, the young Eric attended South Street, Shipcote and Lobley Hill Schools before heading to the Boys Grammar at 11. Leaving school, his career as a performer began as a singer of a chaotic punk band False Idols, which played just three gigs before splitting up. …
