NOW that the royal wedding is on, the pressing issue de nos jours is surely who will design The Dress. Alexandra Shulman, editor of Vogue, has high expectations: "The chance to design Kate's wedding dress will be one of the big fashion coups of the decade," she says. "She has a very sure sense of style and I would imagine already has a pretty good idea who she wants to do it.

"It will almost certainly be a British designer but not necessarily a big name. Wedding dresses demand particular skills, especially if you are royal. It will have to be magnificent but perhaps in this climate not too ostentatious. It will also need to be highly photogenic - something that can be seen on all kinds of media throughout the world."

Daniella Helayel is well known as a favourite of Kate's. The London-based Brazilian designer makes simple flattering dresses and Kate is a loyal follower of her fashions. However, Helayel has declined to comment on speculation.

Friends point out that she does not design bridal wear: "Unless Kate wants to walk down the aisle in something entirely different I don't think that she is going to be wearing Issa. …
