WESTOE did their promotion prospects no harm at all on Saturday, as they defeated second-placed Fylde in National Two North, writes MARK SMITH.

The high-flying Lancastrians were sent away empty-handed courtesy of a 23-5 home win at a rain-soaked Wood Terrace, as Westoe took full advantage of the elements.

James Clark was the tormentor-inchief - the outside centre crossing for a hat-trick of tries in a well-deserved bonus point victory.

Right wing Gareth Kerr added the other try for the Shieldsmen, as their eager forwards showed far greater desire than their illustrious opponents to win the loose ball.

Westoe director of rugby, Andy Howells, said: "We just wanted it more than them.

"Some of the top sides come here, and they struggle psychologically with the slope, the wind and the mud.

"Our lads coped well with the conditions and really took the game to them, it's a great win for us against a top side and we're delighted with the result. …
