ANNFIELD Plain went close to halting Ryhope CW's championship challenge but a late, late goal earned the Wearsiders three crucial points.

Chris Trewick headed the visitors in front after just five minutes but shortly afterwards, Arron Robertson equalised.

Play moved quickly from end to end despite the difficult conditions at Derwent Park and just when it appeared a draw would be the outcome, Trewick struck the winner with only a minute left on the clock.

With leaders New Marske on Cup duty and Easington Colliery's game one of three to be postponed, Ryhope closed the gap on the leading pair.

Ashbrooke Belford House are level on points with Ryhope but they too left it late before claiming victory at Houghton Town.

It was not until the 88th minute that the deadlock was broken. Goalkeeper Dean Caris made a superb save but when the ball rebounded to Martin Deacon he made no mistake.

Houghton pushed players forward in search of an equaliser and deep into stoppage time their hopes ended as Lee McAndrew produced a tremendous leftfoot shot from 25 yards which flashed into the net. …
