RE "We're not all scroungers" (Chronicle Letters) - I can empathise with the writer, having had a similar experience. After a career spanning almost 30 years, I had to retire due to ill health.

I will not go into detail, suffice to say that I was not entitled to any benefits as I had a private pension but had to sign on to qualify for a state credit as I was under state retirement age.

I, too, had to attend an interview to justify why I was still unemployed (I was attending a training course). The letter was offensive in the extreme and threatened to "cut my benefits with immediate effect" if I did not attend. What benefits? The interview was an experience I would not care to repeat - the Job Centre Plus workers are not sympathetic to individual need and obviously interview from a script. I did not believe they had the training to deviate from that so, in an attempt to keep the dignity of all concerned, I signed a form to cancel my so-called claim and never went back. …
