Gateshead Hit by Kay's Exit; Loan Man Michael Returns to Sunderland

BLUE Square Bet Premier club Gateshead have had their depleted defensive resources further stretched after Michael Kay turned down a third month on loan at the International Stadium.

The 20-year-old has returned to Sunderland after featuring in all of Gateshead's 10 games during his twomonth loan spell.

The former England Under-17 international scored on his debut against Mansfield Town and created Gateshead's goal in his final game against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday. Gateshead boss Ian Bogie had hoped the Consett-born player would extend his stay, but Kay has declined the offer to do so.

Kay has been frustrated at a lack of opportunity to play in his preferred position at the centre of defence, especially with James Curtis ruled out until the New Year.

His decision to return to the Stadium of Light, however, has left Bogie with an unwanted dilemma with experienced left-back Paul Heckingbottom out for another couple of weeks.

Bogie said: "We would like to have extended Kay's time at Gateshead and it is disappointing that he has opted to go back to Sunderland.

"He would have been in the shop window playing senior football at a good level rather than reserve-team football, but we wish him well for the future. …
