Hot Favourites Blyth Worried about State of Pitch

BLYTH Spartans boss Mick Tait believes the Croft Park pitch could be a leveller tonight when underdogs North Shields are the visitors in the Northumberland Senior Cu p. Saturday's FA Trophy win over Stafford Rangers left the pitch in a poor condition following the large amount of rainfall in the region.

A rejuvenated Blyth are hot favourites to overcome a North Shields side four leagues below them in the non-league pyramid, but Tait is taking nothing for granted.

He said: "On paper we should win the game but that was the case last year when we were knocked out by Ashington, and the pitch tonight could be a leveller.

"Saturday's game did a lot of damage to the pitch and if the wet conditions persist it could be wrecked for the season.

"As we are a passing side that would be disastrous, so in that respect it would be better if tonight's game was off and played when the pitch has had time to recover." The Spartans will once again be without injured top scorer Paul Brayson, who has earmarked a return for the trip to Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday. …
