Athletes Set for Big Stage

WITH the school year nearing an end, so too is long-distance runner Marlie Campton's time as Bangalow Public School's top athlete.

The 12-year-old will have one last chance to do her school proud and leave on a high by picking up a medal when she competes in the 800m track event at the School Sport Australian track and field championships in Bendigo this weekend.

She qualified for the nationals with an impressive time of 2 minutes 21.62 seconds at the State championships in August.

Marlie's mother said this weekend will be the culmination of years of hard work the entire family has put in.

"I don't think people realise the amount of hard work that goes into it," Mrs Campton said.

"Quality running tracks just aren't around in Bangalow; we have to travel to the Gold Coast and Brisbane for Marlie to train and get race experience."

The proud mother is quietly confident that her daughter can pick up a medal this weekend. …
