NICK CLEGG faced a growing crisis today over the tripling of tuition fees to up to [pounds sterling]9,000 as his rating among Liberal Democrats plummeted.

The number of party members who believe he is doing a good job has almost halved since the furore erupted, according to a survey.

Facing a backlash over the party's U-turn on opposing tuition fee increases, Lib-Dem MPs are agonising over whether to vote against the Coalition's university funding reforms, back them or abstain.

They held a meeting lasting more than two hours on Tuesday to discuss the fees as support for the party collapsed to about 10 per cent.

much of the public anger is being directed at Deputy Prime minister mr Clegg. The Liberal Democrat leader has dropped from first to sixth in the ratings for senior parliamentarians from his party, according to the survey of 600 members carried out by LibDem-Voice.org.
