Farmland Security Remains in Doubt

ALTHOUGH council's new planning scheme is leading the way in Queensland, there are still concerns it will not do enough to protect rural land in the Southern Downs from being cut up into lifestyle blocks.

At last week's general meeting Cr Jo McNally compared the unsuitability of four big dogs in a house in town with the unsuitability of cramming people together on good-quality agricultural land.

This raised the question of whether the new planning scheme will go far enough in trying to stop this kind of development.

Council's planning department scooped an array of awards for its work in developing a scheme under the Sustainable Planning Act.

The first draft was given to State Government for comment and is now back in the council department for planners to work on recommendations and suggestions.

However, at last week's general meeting, councillors said they were left with "nothing to hang their hats on" as the State Government planning scheme gave little allowance for our local version to protect good-quality agricultural land. …
