Prime Mover Tips Pollies over the Edge

PUBLIC money shouldn't be frivolously spent on equipment and vehicles until a full review of council's fleet is carried out, a councillor said at last week's general meeting.

Councillor Vic Pennisi, who earlier in the year successfully fought to stop the engineering department from purchasing a $200,000 excavator he wasn't sure they needed, again spoke up against purchasing a $250,000 prime-mover and two $226,000 tip trucks.

Only he and Cr Mally McMurtrie voted against the purchases, so the recommendation was passed.

Not before Cr Pennisi pushed his point.

"I think first we need to have that debate to economise some of this machinery. So I'm going to vote against it," he said.

Engineering Director Peter See argued his department would be unable to do a comprehensive review until at least 12 months of data had been gathered.

A Plant Committee has been formed to discuss such issues and Cr Neil Meiklejohn said while he saw Cr Pennisi's point, the opportunity would be there next year to make such decisions after the data was gathered. …
